A stock picker, also called an order picker is a machine that is quite similar to a forklift. It allows the driver to utilize forks to pick up a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking some objects, and this feature is something the forklift does not provide. Normally, order pickers are powered by electricity. These type of machinery are mostly used in a warehouse environment. Usually they are used for transporting pallets and completing specific jobs in the stocking and shelving department.



The operator of the oder picker sits up on a platform where they operate the controls. These controls help to direct the machine forward, backward or steer it from side to side. When the operator has positioned the unit in place the tines could be lifted up to the required level which makes it convenient for the operator. For instance, if the materials required, are located on a shelf which the operator cannot reach, then whole platform can be raised up to certain level. Due to the counterweight situated at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.



When the order has been picked, the platform is lowered back to its original position. Then the order picker can be driven to its next load. With most models, it is possible to move the order picker whilst the platform is raised, however, several companies might have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers in the name of safety. An order picker can also put pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers could be utilized to complete these specific jobs at some companies instead.
